This lecture is from the course Generative AI For All in Plain English - Essentials.
In this lecture, I introduce the most essential aspects of AI history that will be covered in the following lectures. Understanding the history of AI can help better understand the current state of AI and its potential future. I show that there have been periods of hope and despair in AI research, known as AI summers and AI winters, respectively.
The progress of science and AI is shown to be more like a wavy and unpredictable path with surprises along the way, rather than a straight line of progress. The next lecture will delve into more detail about the three key historical reasons for the genesis and development of AI.
